Sports

Golf

Golf is one of my primary sports. I have been playing golf since I was about 14 yrs old. My father brought me into golf and it was something we shared until he passed away. I went on a group trip to a Masters practice round in Augusta, GA and was able to walk on one of greatest courses in the world. Augusta National is an amazing place. I have also gone to US Opens at Pinehurst and the US Womens Open at Pine Needles.

Snow Skiing

Snow skiing is important to me, too. Again, my father brought me into skiing when I was around 14 yrs old and it was something we shared for many years until old injuries made him give it up. I enjoy ski vacations in the Rockies and other areas out west.

Scuba Diving

I achieved my initial scuba diving certification in 2003 and I am now an SSI Master Diver. My wife is a scuba diver, too, and we met on a scuba trip to Cozumel, Mexico. We have been diving all over the world and we enjoy it immensely. Night diving is truly a fabulous experience.

Soccer

I started playing soccer after I joined IBM in the 1980s. I played on IBM league teams and CASL teams for many years. I was captain of my IBM league team for almost 10 yrs. I retired from active play but I still enjoy watching European and World Cup matches.

Volleyball

I learned to play volleyball when I was young and took volleyball as a physical education class in college. When I joined IBM I played for many years in IBM leagues. I also played in the Raleigh city leagues for several years.

Basketball

I have played basketball for a long time though not much recently. Our family had a cement court which was about one third the size of a full court. I played basketball in IBM leagues for several years and played pick up games at Raleigh city parks.

Cycling

I’ve been riding bicycles since I was a kid. My wife and I have hybrid bikes and we enjoy going out on greenways or riding in the neighborhood. We have also taken them with us on vacations to such places as the Outer Banks and Charleston.

Tennis

I have played tennis off and on since I was a kid. My wife enjoys tennis and was a serious tennis player for many years.

Swimming

I learned to swim at an early age. I went through all of the YMCA swim classes – Minnow, Fish, Flying Fish and Shark. I also participated on the Y swim team for two years. Later I took Advanced Swimming and Lifeguard Certification in college as phys ed classes. I still swim occasionally for fitness at the AE Finley Y in Raleigh.

Yoga

My wife and I attend yoga classes. We started with classes at the Y and have really enjoyed yoga. It’s a great way to keep flexible and release stress.
